What Is Truth?

(50 Years on the Path)

My name is Rich and I've been trying to answer that question for a very, very long time. Have I been successful? You be the judge based on this sampling of Wine from 30 (now 50) years laboring in the LORD'S Vineyard. Though shared with countless friends, associates and acquaintances over the years, this is the first time (then, not now) I've felt called to offer it in a public forum. (1998 WIT Introduction)

Abstract

Abstract

Jung, in his commentary on the Secret of the Golden Flower, said that at some point in the exploration of a man's psyche there is a universal tendency for the subconscious to issue forth circular images which, in the East, are called Mandalas, images said to represent consecrated space. Although definitely representative of mine, I must admit most were called forth consciously to represent particular conceptual insights. Christians may wish to relate to them in terms of Ezekiel's Wheel(Ez 1:15)

Author's Background

Author's Background

My background is probably not much different from most baby boomers: I grew up with TV in the idyllic '50s, went to college and war in the radical '60s, to work and back for a masters in the energetic '70s, retired from one job and started another in the selfish '80s, lost a job and found another in the disillusioned '90s. My current status is that of a retired Air Force Major and Air Line Pilot.

Journals

Journals

The sample journals that appear in the site were written directly into the computer in 1986 in order to avoid subsequent transcription. In the 1987-1988 time frame I began journaling in notebooks. Perhaps because I was away from home a lot more after I retiring and computer journaling was no longer viable. To date I have filled more than 30 journals and have little no idea what's in them, other than a composite of thoughts, ideas, insights, writings, notes and quotations I felt worth of capturing.

Metaphors

Metaphors

The metaphors evolved at the suggestion of a very dear friend -- a past and present sounding board for the insights, who felt I needed to distill the ideas to their essence. In the back of my mind, there was also the thought that this might be the best format for a first book, should I ever choose to publish. Those that appear on this site are personal favorites from more than 200 (and counting).

Open Letters

Open Letters

The open letters you'll find in this area were all written spontaneously in response to random conversations over the years. The first, for example, sprung from a brief encounter with a Southern Air Lines flight attendant who noticed I was reading a copy of The Tibetan Book of the Dead and said she had been looking for a copy. Now that, as esoteric as that book was in 1978, was not a coincidence.

Poetry

Poetry

This particular poetry evolved from a consious intent on my part to find a medium that might allow sharing of insights with those of a more heart oriented persuasion. In more pragmatic moments, I called it an attempt to slip a mental curve ball past the intellect and directly into the catchers mitt of the heart. One piece, in particular, Conceived In Truth, was a summation of my understanding circa 1980, 12 years into my path.

Prose

Prose

Most of the prose may be characterized as flow of consciousness. It was and is a kind of automatic writing in the same sense that the unedited mental outpouring required during essay exams in college is automatic. Rest assured that I am, was and probably always will be a conscious player in this process, though more often than not as a blockage to its flow. The output has been prolific (I stopped using 3X5 cards with nearly 300 titles and 5000 cards).

Recommended Readings

Recommended Readings

Titled The Who Am I and Why Am I Here? (Subtitled: How to Get out of Life Alive) Reading List, the books were originally selected for those who wished their spirit straight up, rather than on the rocks. Suggested for those who preferred the hard stuff; strong meat versus milk in Christian parlance; the "straight skinny," they all represent (in one way shape or form) the esoteric or inner teachings that have been out and available, but largely unnoticed, for more than 100 years.

Sayings

Sayings

A logical extension of my friend's original suggestion to K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple Stupid!!!), though she still contends that most of my writing still goes "way beyond apples." What she means by this is that I am seldom satisfied just to share my verbal seed and allow you to plant and grow your own mental fruit, my natural tendency is to go into minute detail as to how my own apples grew. You ask the time and I start to building a watch (as you're about to find out in spades).

Haiku

Haiku

In a similar vein, the haiku is a further attempt to distill particular insights to their essence. Although classical haiku addresses nature, I have found it to be a wonderful means to further clarify and distill the understandings I have been graced to receive. Haiku, as such, has an almost magical potential to actually evoke a direct and immediate experience of another's inner experience. As such, its fidelity as a means of personal communication is unparalleled.

Unsung Hero

Unsung Hero

The Unsung Hero is a wive's tribute originally written in 1982 as a parting gift for military wives. Particularly applicable to wives whose husbands are frequently absent, it has since become very popular with the wives of airline pilots. The Unsung Hero has appeared in several military publications and, more recently, appeared in the Airline Pilot Magazine. For more details, the poem and its history are located here

Ultimate Name Game

Ultimate Name Game

This section is pretty much hot off the press "and arose as a by-product of playing around" while building this site.. My original intent, at least at a conscious level, was simply offer those unable to relate to my words an opportunity to substitute words that they can relate to during the course of their explorations. Needless to say, I got a bit carried away in the process. But what the heck, at some level, its fun and games anyway.

Relax Into Being

Relax Into Being

These are haiku-like meditations intended to "increase mental focal length and breath of vision" and so "open the focus of our awareness" beyond that which we present identify as ourselves with. They were inspired by Bentinoh's basic "For 2 to 5 seconds, 12 times a day, relax mental focus and notice presence" (likely paraphrased); and Scott Kiloby's: "When you get mentally wrapped around the axle, "Take a moment to relax mental focus" (definitely paraphrased).

Foundational Scripture

Foundational Scripture

These specially selected and arranged Scriptures were included in OOMM, Appendix F, 'Thy Words Were Found and I Did Eat Them," for Christian readers, as means of cross-correlating Biblical references to OOMMs haiku offerings, in order to cross-triangulate those in a Christian context.
